5th Metatarsal Fracture

‼️ Common surgery highlight ‼️

This week we will discuss the 5th Metatarsal Fracture (the long bone on the outside of the foot that connects the little toe). This surgery is common for our Hybrid Reps.

There are two types of 5th Met Fractures.

1. Avulsion Fracture - when a small piece of the bone is pulled off the main portion of the bone by a tendon or ligament. This injury occurs when the ankle rolls.

FACTS: Often times an avulsion fracture is overlooked when diagnosing an ankle fracture.

2. Jones Fracture - occurs in a portion of the 5th metatarsal where less blood is received, which causes it to be more prone to difficulties in healing. They are either a stress (tiny hairline break that occurs over time) fracture or an acute (sudden) break.

FACTS: Jones Fractures are less common than Avulsion Fractures and more difficult to treat. At times, a Jones Fracture does not show up on an X-ray.

Both of the fractures have similar symptoms: Pain, swelling and tenderness on the outside of the foot, difficulty walking and bruising.

If you are looking to have a Hybrid Rep in the Operating Room with you during one of these procedures, give us a call today!

‼️ Surgery Highlight Wednesday ‼️

A calcaneus (heal bone) fracture, can be a disabling and painful injury. Often times this injury takes place during a high energy event - when the heel is crushed under the weight of the body.

Calcaneus fractures are uncommon. Fractures of the tarsal bones account for only about 2% of all adult fractures and only half of tarsal fractures are calcaneus fractures.

The following procedures are used for various types of calcaneus fractures:

Percutaneous screw fixation: If the bone pieces are large, they can sometimes be moved back into place without making a large incision. Special screws are then inserted through small incisions to hold the fracture together.

Open reduction and internal fixation: During this operation, an open incision is made to reposition (reduce) the bones into their normal alignment. They are held together with wires or metal plates and screws.

Our reps offer several fixation devices - perimeter plates, sinus tarsi plates, cannulated screws, cannulated fully-threaded screws.

Triple Arthrodesis

Common Surgery Highlight

Triple Arthrodesis otherwise known as a hind foot fusion.

A fusion is locking the bones together; a triple arthrodesis is a fusion in the hind foot used to treat many types of painful foot deformities. The surgeon fuses the joints (talonavicular, subtalar and calcaneocuboid) under the ankle that allow the foot to move from side to side.

Surgeons attempt to avoid fusions, unless a patient is experiencing extreme pain and has severe foot deformities. Triple Arthrodesis often improves stability - making it easier for the patient to stand and walk, and often offers the best chance for a patient to have a less painful foot with better alignment.

Often times, patients will report being able to fit into their shoes better after the surgery than they did beforehand.

Most patients will experience significant healing within the first three months. But it can take up to a year for maximum improvement.

Rep Shout Out

We are thrilled to have so many wonderful people working with us.

‼️ Rep Shout-Out ‼️

Alex Kiefer and Dev Patel, are one of our favorite Hybrid Rep and Sub-Rep teams. Together they focus mainly on the Med Center (but do work with surgeons in other parts of Houston).

Alex Kiefer started with Hybrid with several years experience and we were thrilled to hire him as a Representative. Since then he has successfully taken on the position of Vice-President of Sales, while still continuing to work with his surgeons on a daily basis.
Dev was brought on as a sub-rep. Dev has maintained this role successfully for four years. Dev is always smiling and always willing to lend a helping hand!

If you’re looking for an experienced Hybrid Rep to assist you in the OR, give these two a call today!

Ankle Fractures

A common surgery our reps assist with in the OR are Ankle Fractures.

Ankle Fractures are when one or more bones that make up the ankle joint are broken. When you experience an ankle fracture you can need surgery depending on the degree of the break - this is when a surgeon will contact our reps, to use one of our devices.

Fun fact -
Three bones make up the ankle joint:
- Tibia - shinbone
- Fibula - smaller bone of the lower leg
- Talus - a small bone that sits between the heel bone (calcaneus) and the tibia and fibula.

Two joints are involved in ankle fractures:
- Ankle joint - where the tibia, fibula, and talus meet
- Syndesmosis joint - the joint between the tibia and fibula, which is held together by ligaments

Doctors classify ankle fractures according to the area of bone that is broken. For example, a fracture at the end of the fibula is called a lateral malleolus fracture, or if both the tibia and fibula are broken, it is called a bimalleolar fracture.

Contact us today to find out how our reps can assist with an ankle fracture (and many other extremity injuries) in the OR.
